What Is a Verruca?

A verruca is simply a type of wart that specifically appears on the feet. It is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which triggers an overgrowth of skin cells on the soles or around the toes. These often look like small lumps with rough skin, sometimes showing tiny black dots at the centre.

While some verrucas are barely noticeable, others can feel quite painful, especially when you are standing or walking, often described as the feeling of having a small stone in your shoe. They are a very common foot complaint and nothing to be worried or embarrassed about.

At FOOT CARE, we see verrucas every single day. Our goal is to provide warm, practical advice and effective treatments to get you back on your feet comfortably.

How Do Verrucas Spread?

Verrucas are caused by a virus that thrives in warm, damp environments. It enters the skin through tiny, often invisible breaks, usually in places where people walk barefoot.

Warm Places

The virus is often picked up in communal areas like swimming pools and changing rooms where feet are bare and the floor is damp.

Small Breaks

The virus enters through tiny breaks in the skin. From there, it can spread to other parts of your foot or to other people if precautions aren't taken.

Simple Tips

Wear flip-flops in pools, don't share towels, and keep feet dry. Covering the verruca with a plaster can also stop the spread.

Verruca Treatment Options at FOOT CARE

Silver Nitrate Treatment

Silver nitrate is a gentle yet effective chemical treatment. We carefully apply it to the surface of the verruca, which helps to destroy the virus-infected skin cells. During the process, you might feel a mild tingling, but it is generally painless. Depending on the size and age of the verruca, several sessions are typically spaced out over a few weeks to achieve the best results.

Cryotherapy (Freezing)

Cryotherapy involves using liquid nitrogen to 'freeze' the verruca. This process creates a small blister around the growth, encouraging your immune system to recognize and fight the virus. It is normal to feel a cold, pinching sensation during treatment. Some patients find the area slightly tender afterwards, and more than one session may be needed for complete clearance.

The right treatment choice depends on your specific needs, activities, and medical history. We will always have a full discussion about the best options and any associated costs before we begin your care.

Verruca Dry Needling

Verruca dry needling is a minor procedure carried out under local anaesthetic to stimulate the body's immune response. This technique is often recommended for stubborn, long-standing verrucas by using a fine needle to break down the infected tissue, encouraging natural clearance. Our experienced clinicians perform this treatment in a safe, controlled environment to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the process.

Healthy Foot Advice

Looking After Your Feet at Home

Managing a verruca at home requires patience and the right routine. By following simple hygiene steps, you can help speed up the healing process and, most importantly, prevent the virus from spreading to other areas or other members of your household. We recommend a proactive approach to keeping your feet clean and dry.

  • Change socks daily and keep feet dry
  • Use your own nail tools exclusively
  • Avoid picking at the verruca
  • Apply OTC treatments exactly as directed
When Home Care is Suitable

Healthy adults with a single, non-painful verruca can often start with home treatments. Regularly filing away rough skin (don't share the file!) and applying over-the-counter gels can be effective if caught early.

When to Opt for Clinical Care

Home treatments should be avoided and professional advice sought if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or an impaired immune system. Seek help if verrucas are spreading, very painful, or appear on children.
